In the early 1980s, a quiet collaboration in Florida’s Gulf Coast boatbuilding hub yielded a highly capable but remarkably rare cruising yacht that remains a cult favorite among serious passagemakers today. The Nautical Development Offshore 40, manufactured between 1983 and 1985, is a stout, centercockpit cruiser that represents a fascinating convergence of performanceoriented naval architecture and rugged, liveaboardfocused engineering. Originally designed by the innovative Floridabased designer Lee Creekmore, the vessel’s hull molds were acquired by Steve Lippincott, who, alongside his design team, refined the deck, interior, and structural layout to create what they marketed as the ultimate cruising yacht. Built by the Nautical Development Corporation in St. Petersburg and Largo, Florida, only fourteen of these robust vessels were ever completed, making each surviving model a prized find on the secondhand market.
