Najad 400/405 Buyer's Guide
The Najad 400/405 on the brokerage market is a Judel/Vrolijk-designed 40-foot center-cockpit cruiser built by Najad Yachts from 2003 to 2009, now sought by couples and families wanting a sheltered offshore layout with customizable interiors. Because these yachts were built to order, the used fleet shows variety in both factory and later owner additions, but the core hull, rig, and three-layout accommodation plan remain the constants a shopper evaluates.
Layouts on the Used Market
The design was offered with three interior arrangements, and on the used market you will mostly meet the standard plan with a centerline double berth aft and one head off the saloon. Alternative aft configurations placed outboard single berths or two staterooms, the latter reached by walking through one to get to the other — a privacy point to check against your own plans. The galley runs down the passageway with sinks that leave no dish space to either side, and the saloon could carry a starboard settee berth or Streisand chairs. High freeboard lets the cabin sole rise for area, but the trade was a small forecabin under a flush foredeck hatch and no voluminous lazarette, so judge your ground-tackle and provisioning stowage early.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Used 400/405s commonly carry a heating system, chartplotter, autopilot, AIS, radar, and a furling main, with hot water, a liferaft, and a cockpit shower frequently present. For power and energy, generators, inverters, and lithium batteries are commonly fitted, and an electric winch setup often appears alongside a bow thruster — meaningful for short-handed docking and house loads. Sail-handling and downwind kits usually include an asymmetric spinnaker or gennaker with a carried-on-mast spinnaker pole, and teak decks, a freezer, and a bow thruster round out the common cruising spec. Buyers should confirm the condition of teak and the capacity of the lithium or original battery bank rather than assume.
What to Inspect
The cockpit is on the small side for a 40-foot center-cockpit design, with one deep locker the original review found hard to use efficiently and only small saddlebag quarter lockers besides. There is no voluminous lazarette, so inspect the saddlebag lockers and deep cockpit locker for water ingress or poor drainage paths. The flush foredeck hatch gives the only access to the small forecabin — check its seal and framing. Chainplates sit in the middle of the side decks; examine the deck around them for compression or leakage. The galley passageway sinks with no side stowage are a design fact, not a defect, but verify nothing was modified to obstruct the passage.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
The used fleet is typically found in Germany, Spain, and Gibraltar. For a buyer, the Najad 400/405 rewards those who want volume and shelter over a big aft deck:
- Confirm which of the three aft layouts you are viewing and whether walk-through access suits you
- Inspect chainplate decks, foredeck hatch seal, and locker drainage
- Verify teak deck condition and the real capacity of the battery or lithium upgrade
- Match equipment (heating, autopilot, bow thruster, furling main) to your cruising plan
