Buying a used Najad: a well-built yard with an eventful ownership history

A used Najad carries two things worth weighing separately: the boat's own construction, and the corporate chapter it was built under. Najad's yard on Orust, Sweden, has passed through a bankruptcy in 2011, a purchase by boat manufacturer Nord West the following year, that combined company's own later administration, and a 2018 change of ownership to investor Håkan Eksandh's Hexiron group before production returned to Henån on Orust in November 2022. None of that changes what a well-maintained hull is worth, but it means "Najad" on the transom covers boats built under different owners, at different points in that history. The category fit is narrower too: these are center-cockpit, offshore-oriented cruisers built for passagemaking comfort, closer in spirit to Hallberg-Rassy and Malö than to lighter performance cruisers, so buyers chasing outright speed should look elsewhere.

Which era to target

Construction changed over Najad's history, and it's worth confirming which method built a specific hull rather than assuming from model year. Early-2000s models like the 460 and 380 were hand-laid; later models, including the 355 and 570, moved to vacuum-infused construction instead -- a more consistent lamination process, though neither method by itself should decide a survey. Buyers should also place a given hull within Najad's ownership history: a boat built under the original Najadvarvet AB, under Nord West & Najad, or after the 2018 change to Hexiron-backed ownership may carry different equipment standards and paperwork trails, and a seller or broker should be able to say which chapter theirs belongs to.

What to inspect across the range

Electrical systems are worth particular attention on the 460: Cruising World's review flagged untinned wire in the DC system, a sealed master AC breaker box in a cockpit locker prone to dampness, and DC fuses tucked in a dark spot under the nav seat -- Najad said it would relocate the AC breakers belowdecks on request -- plus corrosion on propane-locker fittings suggesting the locker was getting wet or draining poorly.
