Leopard 46 / Moorings 4600 Buyer's Guide
The Leopard 46 is the Simonis Voogd–designed successor to the Leopard 45, built by Robertson & Caine for both private owners and charter fleets under The Moorings and Sunsail. On the brokerage market it appears as ex-charter and private examples alike, with the four-cabin arrangement the more common of the available layouts though three-cabin-with-utility and five-cabin versions are also to be found.
Layouts on the Used Market
Charter four-cabin layouts are the more common on the used market, but both are available; ex-charter examples are common. From the factory the boat could be had with a three-room-plus-utility plan, a four-bedroom layout, or five doubles, every one with private heads. The owner's cabin occupies the aft starboard hull with its own steps, and the port-forward hull can be a utility space for workshop or laundry use. A signature front door opens to a forward cockpit, and a four-panel glass door merges the salon with the helm-level cockpit.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Buyers will commonly find a well-equipped offshore package. Power and energy systems are commonly fitted with autopilot, solar, lithium batteries, inverter, and a Starlink terminal, and a circumnavigation-grade setup is usual rather than exceptional. Sail handling is eased by standard electric winches and a protected helm suited to single-handed offshore sailing. Safety gear commonly includes an EPIRB and life raft. The optional electric platform that extends the cockpit deck when the tender is launched is a notable comfort upgrade seen on some boats.
What to Inspect
The trade to verify on a hybrid-equipped 46 is the regen system's fixed propellers, which induce at least 1 knot of drag under sail anchor. Where the boat carries twin Yanmar diesels instead, folding propellers can be fitted, removing that drag but losing regeneration. Confirm which propulsion path the individual hull took, and on hybrid boats check the separate 27-kilowatt-hour battery banks and the OneBox controller for fault history.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
These cats are typically found in the United States and New Zealand. For a shopper, the practical checklist is short:
- Decide diesel twins versus hybrid drive and accept the fixed-prop drag trade on hybrids
- Favor the layout that fits use — four-cabin charter versions are easiest to source
- Verify autopilot, lithium house bank, inverter, and solar are present and healthy
- Confirm EPIRB and life raft currency if buying for offshore plans
