Buying a used Leopard: the same hull, two different service lives
A used Leopard is rarely a stand-alone purchase decision — it is a decision about which life the hull lived first. Robertson and Caine builds Leopard and Moorings hulls side by side in the same Cape Town factory, so the structural boat underneath is the same whether the badge reads Leopard or Moorings; what differs is the duty cycle. A charter-fleet hull spent its early years absorbing bareboat-renter mileage under a standardized configuration, while a privately-ordered Leopard carries whatever layout, options, and extras its first owner chose. That means the badge on the transom tells a buyer less than the boat's actual service history does: an ex-charter hull and a private-owner hull can be structurally identical while carrying very different wear.
Which era to target
Construction changed meaningfully in 2025. Robertson and Caine retired its older multi-stage infusion process in favor of what it calls single shot infusion, a change the builder paired with acoustic leak-detection equipment for tighter vacuum control before layup. It debuted on the Leopard 46 and is expected to spread through the rest of the range over time, so a boat's actual build date — not just its model year — determines which hull-construction generation it belongs to. Ask a broker or surveyor to confirm rather than assuming from the model name alone.
What to inspect across the range
Helm sightlines are worth checking model to model rather than assumed. SAIL Magazine's review of the Leopard 50 flagged visibility from the helm as good forward and to starboard but "iffy" to port; reviewing the following Leopard 46, SAIL noted the helm was raised a few inches specifically for better forward visibility. Sit at the helm and sight forward and to port before buying, particularly on models built before that change.

Leopard's range runs from the high-30s to the high-50s in length, in both sail and power configurations, so size and layout matter more than chasing any single "best" model.
