The Islander 342 represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of Islander Yachts, marking the transition from the traditional, heavydisplacement aesthetics of the 1960s to the performanceoriented "California Look" of the late 1970s. While the original Islander 34, designed by Joseph McGlasson in 1966, featured a full keel and a more conservative profile, the 342 was a complete redesign commissioned from the legendary naval architect Robert Perry. Launched around 1977, this iteration was intended to capture the burgeoning market for fast, nimble coastal cruisers that did not sacrifice interior volume. The 342 shares a distinct design language with Perry's other work for the brand, most notably the highly successful Islander 28, emphasizing a balanced hull form and a modern underbody.
