Haber 620 Buyer's Guide
The Haber 620 is a Polish-built, Janusz Konkol–designed 21-foot gaff sloop aimed at newcomers who want a real cabin cruiser they can still tow. On the used market she appears as a trailerable centreplate boat with an unusually complete interior for her length, and the right example will float on a wet lawn as readily as it sails.
Layouts on the Used Market
Most 620s follow the standard plan: a V-berth forward, a port dinette that converts to a double, a small galley opposite, and an enclosed head aft — a layout built on a full interior moulding finished in Polish oak. Some boats carry the alternative twin-rudder arrangement with the outboard set in a cockpit well rather than on the transom; either way the cockpit is small, happiest with three aboard. The centreplate is fully retractable, so board-up draft is barely over a foot and the boat trails behind a ordinary car with the dedicated 320 kg trailer.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Consequence-bearing equipment clusters around power, sail handling, and ground tackle. The standard auxiliary is a 4–6 hp transom outboard, and a stainless steel fuel tank built into the starboard locker aft is a worthwhile upgrade for range. Sail handling centres on the single-halyard gunter-gaff main and a pair of Barton 6 sheet winches; the built-in mast lowering system lets one owner drop and raise the short mast solo. For UK-market boats, a factory anchor roller should be present. Beyond those, buyers will simply find whatever canvas and navigation kit prior owners fitted.
What to Inspect
The weakness is cosmetic: dirt collects inboard of the plastic rubbing strake at the hull-to-deck flange grime traps at rubbing strake. Otherwise the hand-laid hull, custom-fit centreplate with individually adjusted bushes, and internal ballast are the structural points to confirm — look for smooth plate operation and an uncracked flange joint.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
The 620 is a modern design, so used examples appear through normal trailer-sailer channels. For a shopper, the short list is: confirm the centreplate raises and lowers freely, check the hull-deck flange for trapped grime and staining, verify the mast-lowering gear and outboard mounting, and prefer a boat with the enclosed head and oak interior intact. A tidy 620 makes an economical, easy-to-own first cruiser.
