Farr sailboats: a design office's name on hulls built around the world

Bruce Farr's signature does not belong to a single shipyard. It belongs to a naval architecture practice — founded in Auckland and carried to Annapolis — whose plans have been built by yards from New Zealand to Sweden to Dubai. A used Farr can mean a grand-prix one-design raced hard for years or a cruiser assembled on a Beneteau production line; the name identifies the designer, not the factory.

Origins and ownership

Bruce Farr began full-time yacht design in Auckland in 1973, and by the mid-1970s his boats were already winning national championships in New Zealand and drawing attention from international racing programs. Russell Bowler joined the practice not long after — Farr Yacht Design's own company history dates his arrival to 1979, while Bowler's own account places his hire in 1981, when Farr offered him a job; either way, the partnership formed around the turn of the 1980s and would run for more than 40 years. The firm opened an Annapolis, Maryland office in 1981, and in 2000 Bruce Farr & Associates was renamed Farr Yacht Design, Ltd. Farr and Bowler retired from the firm in 2012, handing it to a new chapter under Patrick Shaughnessy, Jim Schmicker and Britton Ward; in 2025, Shaughnessy and Schmicker shifted into consulting roles and Ward took over ownership and day-to-day operations.

The designers

Bruce Farr's early New Zealand work led to the fiberglass 12-Metres KZ-3, KZ-5 and KZ-7 for the 1987 America's Cup, and to Steinlager 2, which won every leg of the 1989–90 Whitbread Round the World Race; Farr-designed boats went on to win five editions of the Whitbread and Volvo Ocean Race, and the firm's Foncia, helmed by Michel Desjoyeaux, took the 2008 Vendée Globe. Russell Bowler, born in 1946 and raised sailing in Auckland, brought a construction pedigree that predated the partnership: his foam-sandwich building method traced to the late-1960s Cherub and dinghy racing scene, inspired by Don Lidgard and Tony Bouzaid's GRP foam-sandwich dinghy Miss Hycel, and he built the Cherub Worlds-winning Jennifer Julian II in 1970 using the technique mostly, as he put it, because "we didn't have any woodworking tools." He later engineered the first fully composite maxi hull — a foam-carbon-kevlar sandwich for the 1985–86 Whitbread yacht UBS Switzerland, developed with Du Pont and Richard Honey of High Modulus — and shepherded Lloyd's approval, started in March 1985 and granted that September, for a fiberglass 12-Metre America's Cup yacht, clearing the way for KZ-3 and KZ-5. Britton Ward studied naval architecture at the Webb Institute and earned a master's in ocean engineering at MIT before joining the Annapolis office in 1996; he became a shareholder when Farr and Bowler retired in 2012, and took full ownership in 2025.

Construction through the eras

The 1987 America's Cup trio of Lloyd's-approved GRP 12-Metres marked the end of metal America's Cup hulls — every Cup since has been raced in fiberglass or composite boats — and that approval traced directly back to Bowler's foam-sandwich experiments a generation earlier. Two decades on, Carroll Marine built the Farr 40 One Design's hull from E-glass fibers, epoxy and foam composites with wet prepreg fabrics, with the whole hull and deck post-cured by baking in an oven — production-line composite work a long way from Bowler's improvised dinghy sandwiches.

Lines and generations

The Farr 40 One Design (Design 374) launched in 1997 as a collaboration between Farr International and builder Carroll Marine, filling a gap between the Mumm 30 and the Corel 45; 31 boats sold in its first year, and it became the benchmark of grand-prix one-design racing, with class rules maintained jointly by Farr International, Bruce Farr and Associates and Carroll Marine. The Farr 30, raced originally as the Mumm 30 for title sponsor Champagne Mumm and renamed in 2007, was also built by Carroll Marine. Farr's ocean-racing lineage continued through the Volvo Ocean 65 one-design, used for both the 2014–15 and 2017–18 Volvo Ocean Races, and the Farr 280 (Design 732), Sailing World's 2015 Boat of the Year. In production cruising, Beneteau's own designer page credits Farr with more than 25 years of commissioned work, tracing to the First 45F5 in 1989, with the First 35 and First 40 listed as its most recent Farr designs. Farr's client list also runs to New Zealand one-designs like the 1020, and to modern carbon-fiber projects built by Premier Composite Technologies in Dubai. More recently, Farr's collaborations have included superyacht builder Southern Wind and a relaunched partnership with Milan designer Lucio Micheletti's studio on a 100-foot design, with naval architecture directed by Britton Ward.

Who Farr is for

Farr Yacht Design's own count puts its output at more than 800 projects and over 500 distinct designs, with an estimated 15,000-plus boats built bearing the Farr name — a range wide enough to include one-design grand-prix racers, Whitbread and Volvo ocean campaigners, and production cruisers assembled on major European boatbuilding lines. What ties them together is the design office, not a shared shipyard or era; a Farr buyer is choosing a pedigree in hull lines and construction thinking that different builders have carried out in very different ways.

Frequently asked questions

01Is Farr a boatbuilder?+
No. Farr — originally Bruce Farr & Associates, now Farr Yacht Design — is a naval architecture practice, not a shipyard. Boats carrying the Farr name have been built under license by many separate yards, including Carroll Marine, Sea Nymph Boats, Glass Yachts, BSI Marine and Premier Composite Technologies.
02Who built the Farr 40 One Design?+
The Farr 40 One Design was a collaboration between Farr International and builder Carroll Marine, Ltd. Class rules were established and maintained by a management group representing Farr International, Bruce Farr and Associates, and Carroll Marine.
03What is the Farr 1020?+
A one-design keelboat drawn by Bruce Farr and his team in 1981 and built in New Zealand by Sea Nymph Boats. About 149 were built in total, many sold as hull-and-deck packages for owners to finish themselves.
04Did Farr design production boats for Beneteau?+
Yes. Per Beneteau's own designer page, the two have worked together for more than 25 years, beginning with the First 45F5 in 1989, with the First 35 and First 40 listed among the most recent Farr-designed boats in the Beneteau range.
05Who owns Farr Yacht Design?+
Britton Ward, who joined the firm in Annapolis in 1996, became a shareholder when Bruce Farr and Russell Bowler retired in 2012, and took full ownership and day-to-day operations in 2025 after Patrick Shaughnessy and Jim Schmicker moved into consulting roles.
