Valiant 50 Buyer's Guide
The Valiant 50 on the brokerage market is a Robert Perry double-ender evolved from the Valiant 47, with first deliveries in 1994 and new-build production ending in 2011. Hand-built in Texas to owner specification, about 40 were completed, so every used example is a low-volume, individually configured cruiser rather than a fleet boat. Buyers should expect variety in layout and equipment and should focus inspection on the boat’s documented construction and known-service points.
Layouts on the Used Market
Owner three-cabin layouts are the more common on the used market, but both are available; ex-charter examples are common. The model was offered with four basic interior arrangements and two companionway locations from new, and the deck mold permitted owner-chosen hatches, portlights, Dorades, and center or offset companionway, so used boats vary widely in light and access configuration. The solid teak-and-holly sole over marine plywood and foam-glassed floor timbers are consistent across the type.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Used Valiant 50s commonly carry heating, autopilot, dodger, solar, inverter, chartplotter, AIS, cockpit shower, radar, shorthanded setup, life raft, EPIRB, dinghy davits, freezer, electric winches, bow thruster, wind generator, and air conditioning. These are commonly fitted items rather than rare additions. The boat is easy to sail shorthanded thanks to its cutter rig, self-tailing winches, and autopilot, so many examples will already reflect that intent.
What to Inspect
The Valiant 50 hull is a one-piece solid fiberglass construction using isophthalic resin, nearly two inches thick at the turn of the bilge, with floor timbers of high-density structural foam covered with fiberglass and glassed to the hull. The standard keel is lead weighing 11,000 pounds, attached with 18 stainless steel J-bolts and bedded with 3M 5200 sealant; the optional shoal draft keel is also lead at the same weight with a slightly different shape to maintain righting moment. Check the keel-bolt bedding and toerail fastening, where the deck is through-bolted every 4 1/2 inches with 5200. Because the engine, tanks, and stove were installed last for later removal, confirm access paths remain clear and unobstructed by owner refits.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Typical markets for the Valiant 50 are the United States. The boat is a hand-built, customizable Perry double-ender with ongoing sister-company parts support after new production ended. A short buyer checklist:
- Verify keel J-bolt count and 5200 bedding condition
- Inspect deck toerail through-bolts at 4 1/2-inch spacing
- Confirm engine, tank, and stove access is unblocked
- Match layout to three-cabin or alternative arrangement preference
- Expect commonly fitted cruising electronics and shorthanded gear
