When Nautor Swan introduced the Swan 391 in 1981, the Finnish builder was navigating a critical evolutionary phase 2. Throughout the 1970s, the shipyard had established its global reputation on Sparkman & Stephens designs, which prioritized robust construction and traditional oceanracing lines. However, as the International Offshore Rule (IOR) matured, Nautor sought a injection of modern speed and dynamic handling. They turned to the prominent New Zealand naval architect Ron Holland, whose breakthrough racing yacht Imp had redefined competitive offshore performance. While Holland’s initial collaboration with the yard yielded the highly competitive but starkly finished Swan 39, the subsequent Swan 391 was conceived to balance that purebred racing pedigree with the practical requirements of longdistance cruising. Built between 1981 and 1987 with 52 hulls completed, the Swan 391 remains an iconic representation of the highend, cruiserracer era.
