The Skipper 17 is a 17-foot trailer-sailer designed by Peter Milne and built across four decades under the names Skipper 17, Skipper Mariner, and Eagle 525, with over a thousand examples completed. For a shopper on the used market the appeal is a small cruiser that tows easily, launches from a ramp, and offers a real cabin on later boats — but the range of generations means condition and layout vary more than the shared name suggests.
Layouts on the Used Market
Early boats were open dayboats with a forward storage cuddy, and a small number of the bulbous-cuddy Skipper Mate version were sold. From 1972 a proper cabin appeared with room for two adults and perhaps two children, and the late-1970s Mariner moved to twin bilge plates that removed the centreplate trunk and opened the cabin considerably. The Mk II of 1985 added larger windows and a weathertight transom tiller recess. Eagle 525 boats, built after 1992, carry a cockpit outboard well and standard A-frame mast raising gear. Cabins generally give good sitting headroom, a roof-mounted drop table, and stowage for a cooker and a loo.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Most Skipper 17s come with jib roller reefing and slab main reefing, which let a short-handed crew shorten sail from the cockpit. The Mk II brought a black anodised mast and boom with spreaders and inner-shroud jib sheeting, and an optional cruising chute for light-air downwind work. Eagle 525 examples standardized a tabernacle and A-frame mast raising gear, a meaningful aid when stepping the mast alone on a ramp. Beyond those, owner-fitted navigation or comfort items appear irregularly rather than as standard.
What to Inspect
Because the cabin top is tall and angled and the side decks are narrow, check how the cabin is reached for mooring tasks — owners report it is awkward to clamber around. On Mk I boats verify the transom tiller slot, since the later V-shaped dropped section was introduced specifically because the earlier slot was not entirely weathertight. Where a fixed-bilge-keel version is offered, confirm trailer compatibility, as that variant trailered poorly and sold weakly. Eagle 525 hulls received added ballast in steps through 1999; confirm the configuration matches the build era.
