Designed by the late maritime architect Norman Howard in the early 1970s, the Shipmate Dayboat was engineered to bridge the gap between a highperformance sailing dinghy and a compact coastal microcruiser. Built primarily by the British yard Smallcraft of Blockley, with a small number of later hulls manufactured by the Seaborne Yacht Company, this 16.25foot fiberglass dayboat was conceived for the challenging, shallow tidal waters of the United Kingdom’s East Coast and the Norfolk Broads. The design priorities focused on exceptional trailerability, a highly functional shallow draft, and basic overnight accommodation for adventurous pocketmariners. Over its decadelong production run, the model earned a reputation as an accessible, characterrich pocket yacht capable of expanding the cruising horizons of sailors who did not want the storage fees or maintenance demands of a larger keelboat.
