The S2 6.9 — also sold as the S2 6.9 Grand Slam — is an American trailerable sailboat from the early 1980s, a 22foot racercruiser drawn by Don Wennersten together with Graham & Schlageter for S2 Yachts of Holland, Michigan. Derived from the 1980 S2 6.7 and carrying the same Wennerstendesigned hull, it represents the light, highperformance end of the S2 range, the socalled Grand Slam racing models built with balsacored hulls and decks to save weight and add stiffness. Production ran from 1983 until 1986 with 174 examples completed before the design went out of production, and it later spawned the wingkeel S2 22 in 1985.

S2 6.9 Buyer's Guide

The S2 6.9 Grand Slam is a 22-foot American trailerable racer-cruiser built by S2 Yachts from 1983 to 1986, with 174 completed and a lifting keel that makes it a genuine trailer boat rather than a kept marina slip occupant. On the used market it is a small, light fractional sloop aimed at club racers who also want to cruise short distances, and its balsa-cored Grand Slam construction keeps weight down at the cost of the moisture vigilance any cored boat demands.

Layouts on the Used Market

Every 6.9 shares the same Wennersten-derived hull, so the variable is condition rather than plan. Below you get sleeping for four: a double V-berth forward and two straight settees in the main cabin. The galley is port-side just aft of the bow with an ice box; the head is starboard beside the keel trunk. The lifting keel trunk intrudes into the main cabin sole, and the cockpit carries the keel winch, so judge livability against that trunk footprint rather than expecting open floor.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

A spinnaker is commonly fitted on these boats, the one sail addition a buyer should expect to see for club-racing use. Beyond that, the 6.9 is sparsely equipped from the factory: power is an outboard motor carried in a bracket, not an inboard, and there is no factory electrical or tankage complexity to absorb. A buyer should focus less on gadget lists and more on whether the rig, keel winch, and trailer are sound, since those define the boat's real usability.

What to Inspect

The lifting keel is the system that can sink a deal. It weighs 430 pounds and is raised straight up by a cockpit winch, so inspect the keel pennant or cable, the winch mount, and the trunk where it passes through the hull beside the head. Look for staining or softness around the trunk in the cabin sole, and work the winch to feel for slack or grinding that signals a tired pivot. Any play or weep at that trunk is a direct flooding path on a 22-foot boat and should be weighed as a structural and safety item, not a cosmetic one.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

These boats turn up in the United States. For a viewer, the short list is:

  • Check the keel trunk and winch for play or weep
  • Confirm the spinnaker and rigging are complete
  • Verify the outboard bracket and transom rudder
  • Inspect the balsa core for soft decks
