The Rapier 400 is a 40-foot Broadblue Catamarans catamaran built from 2012 as a light, fast cruising platform that still works as a single-handed-capable family boat. On the used market it rewards buyers who understand sandwich-composite catamarans, because the design’s strengths — low weight, watertight compartmentation, and an open-plan interior — are only as good as the specific hull’s history.
Layouts on the Used Market
Two roof styles appear in the brokerage pool. The short-roof version carries an open helm and puts the galley down in the port hull; the long-roof version encloses the helm and moves the galley to the bridge deck, with notably better forward visibility from the wheel. Both share the Broadblue single saloon-and-cockpit arrangement, three double cabins, two heads, and a saloon that converts to a double berth or TV lounge. The owner’s hull has a king berth, dressing room, and navigation area, while aft cabins use 1.60 m-wide bunks. The boat left the yard with a static hull ventilation system plus opening hatches, recessed LED lighting, a gas detector alarm, and preparation for a water-maker. Power comes from twin 20 hp diesels with saildrives with 2 x 200 liters of fuel. Optional extras worth confirming include an electrically lifting TV, de-mist system, freezer below seating, and an optional shower with sump pump in the starboard heads. None of these are universal, so a viewing should verify which were fitted.
What to Inspect
The Rapier 400’s separate skegs are designed to absorb grounding or coral damage so the monolithic polyester hulls stay intact, so examine each skeg for repairs, gouges, or unfair lines and confirm the hulls behind them are untouched if the skegs sustain any damage the hulls wouldn’t be affected. Check the sliding watertight hatches in each hull for smooth operation and intact seals, since they are the boat’s first defense against cross-flooding. The vacuum-built foam-core hulls and deck above the waterline should be tapped and scanned for delamination or impact damage, paying attention around chainplates and the bowsprit root. Finally, test the static ventilation and any optional sump pumps for odor or standby function in the heads.
