The Melges 40 represents the absolute zenith of the Melges Performance Sailboats lineage, marking a bold transition from traditional fixedkeel sportboats to the complex world of cantingkeel grand prix racing. Launched in 2016, this carbonfiber thoroughbred was the result of an ambitious collaboration between Melges and Botin Partners Naval Architecture, a design firm renowned for their dominance in the TP52 and America’s Cup circuits. Unlike its predecessors, which focused on accessible highspeed sailing for a broad demographic, the Melges 40 was engineered specifically for a professionallevel ownerdriver circuit, pushing the boundaries of what a 40foot onedesign could achieve. The design is characterized by its ultralight displacement, twin rudders, and a canting keel capable of swinging 45 degrees to either side, providing immense righting moment without the weight of a massive crew. This vessel was built to be the "fastest onedesign keelboat in the world" for its size, utilizing a hull shape that is narrow at the waterline but gains significant form stability through its flared topsides and chined hull.
