Introduced in the late 1990s and built in Cape Town, South Africa, by David Bird's Admiral Yachts, the Admiral 38 represents a highly successful marriage of South African oceantested robustness and the elegant naval architecture of Angelo Lavranos. Designed to satisfy the "Space, Pace, and Grace" philosophy, this 38foot cruising catamaran was conceived at a time when the multihull market was transitioning from eccentric, lowvolume builds to fullscale production cruisers. The boat was designed with a dual purpose: to serve as a fast, comfortable coastal cruiser while maintaining the structural integrity required to survive the unforgiving waters of the South Atlantic. This robust construction pedigree was proven repeatedly, as nearly every hull completed at the Cape Town shipyard was sailed some 7,000 officesapproved nautical miles on its own bottom across the Atlantic to buyers in Europe or North America. After Admiral Yachts ceased operations, the enduring utility of the design was confirmed when Celtic Yachts acquired the molds to continue building the model on a semicustom basis.
