The California fiberglass boatbuilding boom of the late twentieth century was a tightly knit ecosystem of shared talent, overlapping designs, and sibling companies. Born from this rich heritage, Lancer Yacht Corporation was founded in 1974 by Dick Valdes and Maury Threinen, the industry veterans who had previously established Columbia Yachts. Looking to capture the surging market for trailerable pocket cruisers, they turned to naval architect W. Shad Turner to design a vessel that pushed the absolute limits of trailerability 3. The resulting Lancer 28 series, which debuted in 1977, represented a bold attempt to deliver the accommodations of a traditional coastal cruiser within a package that could legally travel down any highway without a wideload permit. By 1982, this design culminated in its final and most refined iteration: the Lancer 28T Mk V.
