The Kelt 7.60 is a Jean Berret design that earned a reputation in France as an inexpensive but rugged boat before being reborn as a North American performance cruiser anchor. The Morbihanbased shipyard Kelt built the design, and Kelt Marine in Aurora later produced the North American version, having been at it for only two years as of one period report anchor. The boat carries its name and trademark blue stripes molded into the fiberglass in the French designer tradition, and at the owner's request that logo can be left blank or replaced by the boat's registered name anchor.

Kelt 7.60 Buyer's Guide

The Kelt 7.60 is a small Jean Berret-designed cruiser-racer built by the Morbihan-based shipyard Kelt, with a North American production run added later at Aurora anchor. On the used market she appears as either a French-built original or a Canadian version with a different rudder, and the differences matter more than the age alone suggests.

Layouts on the Used Market

Both build streams share the same fundamental plan: a private bow cabin, roomy main saloon, galley, and a small head with ample lockers for a yacht of this size, and four to five berths under a maximum headroom near 6 ft anchor. The French-built boats had a wooden rudder, while the Canadian Kelt 7.60 received a molded fiberglass air foil rudder that adds lift and eliminates vibration anchor. Keel-model hulls draw about 4 ft 3 in; the centerboard version draws 2 ft 5 in board up for easy landing or 5 ft 3 in down, and carries more ballast anchor. The board-up configuration lets the boat get close to shore and stand easily in areas of high tidal range anchor.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

The Kelt came with Isomat spars carrying internal halyards and Easy-Lock halyard stoppers, a stainless steel handrail on deck, and recessed cleats for crew comfort anchor. A Vetus 9 HP inboard engine is fitted to many examples and drives the boat at an average 4 knots anchor. Owners report the spinnaker is very easy to set up for solo sailing, a useful point when considering a boat bought for single-handed use anchor. Beyond those systems, the French tradition of molded-in name stripes means a blank or re-named logo is a cosmetic choice rather than a defect anchor.

What to Inspect

The hull-deck joint is bolted every six inches with interlocking flanges bonded by lightweight polyester, and the builder claimed the assembly can suspend the boat — check for any hull-deck separation or omitted fasteners anchor. The keel is cast iron treated with two coal-tar epoxy coats and secured by 11 1/2 inch studs with 2 inch stainless washers; verify the coating and stud condition at the recess anchor. The deck is a Divinycell sandwich with wire mesh at stress points, so probe for softness around fittings anchor. The Canadian air foil rudder should be examined for laminate soundness where it replaced the European wooden blade anchor.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

The Kelt 7.60 turns up in Germany and the United Kingdom. For a buyer, the checklist is short but specific: confirm which rudder type the hull carries, inspect the keel studs and coal-tar coating, test the hull-deck flange for tight bolting, and verify the inboard engine and internal-halyard spars. A well-kept example rewards with easy single-handed steering, excellent seakeeping, and a roomy interior that owners describe as reliable and forgiving of mistakes anchor.
