The Swan 40, designed by Germán Frers and launched in 1992, represents a pivotal era for Nautor’s Swan as the builder transitioned from the heavydisplacement philosophies of the 1970s toward the refined, performanceoriented cruiserracers of the modern age. Replacing the legendary Sparkman & Stephensdesigned Swan 40, this Frers iteration was engineered to provide a more spirited sailing experience without sacrificing the "bulletproof" construction synonymous with the Finnish yard. According to the Nautor Swan Heritage archive, 58 hulls were produced between 1992 and 1996, making it a relatively exclusive model that bridged the gap between the smaller 38 and the larger, more powerful 44 and 48 models of the same period. Unlike its predecessor, which featured a traditional skeghung rudder and a more pinched stern, the Frers 40 introduced a modern underwater profile with a highaspect spade rudder and a moderateaspect fin keel, optimizing the yacht for both club racing and fast bluewater passage making.
