The Bristol 45.5 Center Cockpit (CC) represents the apex of the "second generation" of Bristol Yachts, a period where the builder transitioned from the traditional, narrowbeam designs of Carl Alberg toward the more powerful, voluminous forms pioneered by Ted Hood. Produced from the late 1970s through the late 1980s, the 45.5 was marketed as a premier semicustom bluewater cruiser, designed to offer a balance of luxurious accommodations and offshore capability. Built with a solid fiberglass hull and a balsacored deck, the vessel is a testament to the "overbuilt" philosophy that defined the Rhode Island shipyard. The 45.5 was often delivered as a keelcenterboarder, a signature Ted Hood configuration that allowed a heavydisplacement yacht to access shallower harbors while maintaining high stability and windward performance when the board was lowered.
