When the German startup Bente Yachts debuted its first concept in 2015, it sent a shockwave through a relatively conservative European sailing market. Headed by Alexander Vrolijk—son of the legendary naval architect Rolf Vrolijk—the brand championed disruptive thinking to appeal to a demographic that felt alienated by the dark, heavy, and expensive cabins of traditional cruising yachts. Building on that momentum, the company launched its ambitious flagship, the Bente 39, in 2019. Designed by the premier naval architecture firm of Judel/Vrolijk & Co, the Bente 39 was conceived as a fast, lightfilled offshore cruiser that borrowed heavily from the aesthetics and physics of solo ocean racing, specifically Class 40 and IMOCA 60 designs. Rather than following the crowd, the Bente 39 was a bold experiment in merging raw shorthanded performance with a liveable, highly unconventional interior.
