Buying a used Bente: judging the company's history, not just the hull

A used Bente is as much a bet on judel/vrolijk's engineering as it is on the company that built it, and that company's history is unusually eventful for a young marque: a scrappy 2014 startup, a February 2020 insolvency, and a same-year rescue by a Lake Constance boat dealer. None of that changes what's under the deck, but it does mean a buyer should place any given hull on that timeline before judging it. Category fit matters too: Bente's cored, twin-rudder construction and glazed doghouses reward sailors who want distinctive engineering over conventional production-boat looks.

Which era to target

The clearest dividing line in the used market isn't a model year but the 2020 restructuring itself. Boats ordered and built before the insolvency came out of the same yard in Szczecin as those built after Ultramarin Meichle + Mohr's rescue, so construction quality didn't reset with the ownership change — but early production runs did carry their own quirks. Yachting World's test of the Bente 39 noted the boom on production boats was shortened 20cm from the boat it tested, with a reflective glass coating and a third winch option still being planned rather than fitted, details worth checking against a specific hull's build date rather than assumed from press-boat specification. After the relaunch, the Bente 24 remained the company's production focus and the 39 continued being built, while the Bente 28 — announced with a standard swing keel and an 8-10kW electric motor — needed further development before it reached buyers, so the earliest 28s post-date the rescue by some distance.

What to inspect across the range

The brand's signature glazed doghouses carry a recurring trade-off testers have flagged at more than one size. Practical Boat Owner found the Bente 28's transparent deckhouse could make the interior hot below decks in warm cruising grounds such as the Mediterranean, and Yachting World's testers found the Bente 39 could turn uncomfortable sailing upwind in waves given its hull shape. Neither is a defect so much as a characteristic of the design language spanning the lineup, but both are worth weighing against where and how a given boat will actually be sailed.
