Shopping for a used Sabre 30 means choosing among three generations of a Sabre Design Team design launched in 1979, with the Mk III the largest and least blister-prone. Most boats on the market will be Mk I or Mk II examples, since models newer than 1989 are rare, and each generation carries different layout and structural profiles a buyer should weigh before committing.
Layouts on the Used Market
The Mk I and Mk II share identical dimensions at 29 feet 11 inches overall with a slightly ballasted Mk II, and place the galley aft to starboard with a quarter berth and navigation station opposite. The Mk III, introduced in 1986, grows to 30 feet 7 inches and 10 feet 6 inches of beam, and reverses the aft layout so the galley and quarter berth sit to port. All versions have a V-berth forward, a head to port and hanging locker to starboard, and a saloon with opposing settees around a drop-down table. Cabin air comes from two deck hatches and four opening ports, which is adequate rather than generous.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Used Sabre 30s commonly carry an autopilot, chartplotter, dodger, bimini, and cockpit shower as standard cruising kit. Owners often added a spinnaker or asymmetric spinnaker for downwind range. Less common upgrades include a gennaker, hot water, or radar. For a buyer, the canvas trio (dodger, bimini, cockpit shower) signals a boat used for social daysailing, while the autopilot and chartplotter mean the helm is already set for short-handed navigation.
What to Inspect
Osmotic blisters, sometimes severe, are fairly common on Mk I and Mk II hulls, so a survey should include moisture metering and blister inspection. The Mk III used vinylester exterior coats and is less susceptible, a point in its favor if you find one. Separately, deck hardware and cabin handrails on some boats were mounted through the balsa-cored deck without sealing the core, and deteriorated decks from that omission are common. Check handrail bases and winch mounts for softness. Engine access is reasonable, but compartment insulation is not good and the boat is noisy under power; verify the 13- or 18-horsepower diesel (Volvo, Westerbeke, or later Westerbeke) runs clean.
