The Paceship PY 26 was conceived in the early 1970s as an expansive, stable coastal cruiser designed to maximize interior volume and family comfort without completely sacrificing sailing performance. Commissioned by Canadian builder Paceship Yachts of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, the design was penned by John Deknatel of the illustrious naval architecture firm C. Raymond Hunt Associates. At the time of its debut, the PY 26 represented a departure from traditional, narrowbeam pocket cruisers, aiming instead to capture the emerging market of family sailors who desired standing headroom and apartmentlike comfort in a boat that could still be easily handled by a couple or singlehanded. Paceship succeeded in delivering a remarkably comfortable pocket cruiser that competed directly with popular models like the Pearson 26, Grampian 26, and O'Day 27, carving out a reputation for rugged durability and livability.
