The Neptun 22 Back Decker stands as one of the most successful small cruisers in European sailing history, widely credited with popularizing family cruising for the middle class during the 1970s. Produced by the German yard Neptun-Yachten, the Back Decker was a significant evolution of the original Neptun 22 designed by Anton Miglitsch in 1966. While the earlier "Miglitsch" versions featured a traditional coachroof with walkable side decks, the Back Decker (introduced around 1973 by designer Lothar Leichtfuß) utilized a raised-deck or "flush deck" configuration. By extending the cabin sides out to the full beam of the hull, the manufacturer significantly increased interior volume and structural rigidity. Over 6,000 units of the Neptun 22 series were built, making it a ubiquitous sight on the inland lakes of Central Europe and the coastal waters of the Baltic.
