Buying a used Neptun: confirm which Neptun you're looking at first

Before anything else, a used "Neptun" or "Neptune" listing is worth a second look at spelling and origin: the name has been used by at least five unconnected builders — a German yard, a Swedish one-design class, an American production builder, a French dinghy-class racer, and a separately cataloged British design — and they share no hulls, molds, or parts supply. Once that's settled, buying from the German Neptun-Yachten line (the branch behind most of what turns up under this name) means buying into a small, family-run operation that has changed hands and locations repeatedly since 1964 — an insolvency in 1980, a molds-and-naming-rights sale to an interior fit-out firm in 1984, and at least two later ownership changes. That history matters less for parts support than it does for consistency: fit-out quality and even hull details shifted across those eras, so condition and documented provenance should weigh more heavily than the model name alone.

Which era to target

The earliest boats — the 14, 15, and 17 — came out of a farm-barn operation before the yard's 1967 move to Lage, where the 210 and 212 followed. The Miglitsch-designed 22, and the 26, 29, and 24 it spawned, date to the yard's late-1960s growth period. The Warburg-era models — the lifting-roof 25 and the 27 — were the first Neptuns built with a profiled rudder blade, and the 22 itself picked up a facelift and a newly developed balanced rudder around the same time. Boats built after the 1984 move to Rheda-Wiedenbrück reflect a different production philosophy: standardized series building of the 22, 23, 25, 27, and 31 gave way to individualized fitting-out, so two same-model boats from this era can differ meaningfully belowdecks. A buyer chasing the newest German-built option should look toward the Neptun 21, introduced after the 2013 reorganization that also brought in-house stainless fabrication.

What to inspect across the range

Several German Neptuns — the 20, the 22 Backdecker, and the lifting-roof 25 — share the yard's signature lifting-roof design, and the mechanism is worth focused attention on any of them. YACHT's used-boat inspection of the Neptun 20 flagged the lifting-roof scissors, the back box covers, and the window seals as the points to check closely, along with the centerboard on keel-centerboard boats — guidance that applies wherever the same lifting-roof hardware shows up across the range.

Within the German line, size is the simplest axis: pocket cruisers like the 20 and the early 14/15/17 boats sit at one end, and the 26 through 32 — including the 26 MS and 32 MS variants — sit at the other, spanning decades of Warburg- and Rheda-Wiedenbrück-era production. The full model directory on this page breaks those down further; treat anything badged simply "Neptune" without German provenance as a different boat from a different builder entirely.
