The Nauticat 331 is a 33foot ketch designed by Finnish maritime architect Kaj Gustafsson in the late 1990s and built by the Finnish yard Siltala Yachts Oy. It emerged in 1997 when Siltala heavily modified the original Nauticat 33 with an entirely new hull and deck, renaming the upgraded model the 331 — a deliberate break from the 1967 Aarnipalodesigned predecessor rather than a simple update.

Nauticat 331 Buyer's Guide

Shopping the brokerage market for a Nauticat 331 means looking at a 33-foot Finnish ketch built from 1997 with an entirely new hull and deck over the older Nauticat 33. Owner three-cabin layouts are the more common on the used market, but both are available; ex-charter examples are common.

Layouts on the Used Market

The dominant used configuration is the owner three-cabin interior in teak, with ex-charter two-cabin boats also circulating. Either version carries the same 106-gallon water and 132-gallon diesel capacity and the balsa-cored deck over a solid hull. Ex-charter history is worth noting because those hulls have often seen harder cycle use than privately owned boats.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

Most boats on the market carry a practical offshore suite: heating, bow thruster, radar, chartplotter, autopilot, inverter, furling main, hot water, AIS, cockpit shower, and life raft are commonly fitted. Electric winches and a bimini are often seen. Less uniform are air conditioning, solar, spinnaker or asymmetric spinnaker, freezer, dodger, swim platform, and short-handed setup — these appear as owner upgrades rather than standard. For a buyer, the commonly fitted heating and bow thruster speak to cold-weather and tight-quarter utility; the often-seen electric winches reduce crew effort on the ketch's split sail plan.

What to Inspect

The balsa-cored deck above the sheerline is the primary concern on a specific hull — probe for soft spots with a firm press near fittings and look for discoloration or staining that signals moisture in the core anchor. Teak interior joinery should be checked for rot or blackening at seams. The through-bolted hull-to-deck joint deserves a close look for any separation or crazing along the bond line, especially on ex-charter boats.
