The Jaguar 25 has been on the sailing scene for a good many years, a Frank Butler design of the late seventies built in Britain as the UKlicensed counterpart to the Catalina 25. Some 350 were already afloat when period testers sailed her, and the marketing side later passed to Canvey Yacht Builders, who also built the hulls. She is a 25foot monohull of solid fiberglass construction with iron ballast, offered in fin or bilgekeel form, and she went through a running series of changes to the rig, layout, and construction during her production life.

Jaguar 25 Buyer's Guide

The Jaguar 25 is the British-built, Frank Butler-designed small cruiser-racer also known as the Catalina 25, produced from the late seventies with a running series of factory updates to rig, layout, and construction. On the used market she appears in fin- and bilge-keel forms, sometimes with no engine, an outboard, or a recommended inboard such as the Bukh DV8 or Volvo MD5B with sail drive. She is a practical coastal boat whose hulls differ in detail across the changes made during the build run.

Layouts on the Used Market

Two keel configurations dominate the secondhand fleet. The bilge-keel Jaguar 25 draws about 4.4 to 4.7 feet dependent on load and can be beached, suiting shallow estuaries, while the fin-keel version draws about 5.7 to 6.0 feet and is more maneuverable but less directionally steady than a full-keel comparable anchor. Below, the port dinette converts to a short double berth supplemented by a fill-in cushion to the starboard single, with a galley to port of the hatch, heads and hanging locker forward of the main bulkhead, two full berths in the bow, and a quarter berth under the cockpit sole. The cockpit is self-draining with a port sail locker and a starboard stowage tray.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

Autopilots are a commonly fitted aid on brokered Jaguar 25s, useful given the weather helm the tester noted under strong gusts. For propulsion, a 4 to 5 hp outboard is the usual auxiliary for close-quarters handling, though inboard Volvo or Bukh diesel with sail drive was a factory option. The rig carries three genoa sizes beyond the working jib, so a buyer should confirm the full wardrobe and the condition of the swept-back shrouds and babystay added during the model's updates.

What to Inspect

The period test noted the working jib of 148 square feet is a lot of canvas for a 25-foot boat in gusty force 4 to 5 conditions, and the reviewer suggested it could be smaller or carry reef points to remove another 20-odd square feet anchor — check whether any prior owner addressed this or sails habitually reefed. The fin-keel version's lower directional stability versus a full keel is inherent, not a defect, but verify the iron keel's bonding and any grounding damage. Confirm which generation of rig and layout the hull represents, as factory changes were made to the rig, layout, and construction.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

The Jaguar 25 is typically found in the United Kingdom and Ireland. For a shopper, the short checklist is: decide bilge vs fin keel for your waters; confirm engine type and sail-drive condition if inboard; verify the full genoa set and jib reefing provision; inspect the later rig updates; and check the berth layout suits your crew given the short port double.
