Buying a used Jaguar: choosing a design era, not just a length

A used Jaguar isn't one lineage but three, built by the same Essex operation across roughly two decades: American-designed boats built under license, a home-grown British small-boat line, and a later, larger generation from a well-known racing designer. Hull condition matters as much here as with any older fibreglass boat, but with a Jaguar the design generation shapes what's actually being bought — a licensed Catalina pedigree, a simple British lifting-keeler, or a larger, later cruiser built in much smaller numbers.

Which era to target

The earliest Jaguars — the 22, 25 and 27 — are UK-built versions of Frank Butler's Catalina designs, built by Eric Birch from the early 1970s and marketed under the Jaguar banner into the mid-1980s; buyers after that Catalina pedigree, and the internal-GRP-moulded interior construction that came with the 27, should start here. John Mullins' 21 and 23, commissioned by that same Eric Birch from 1977, followed with a simpler build aimed at coastal and estuary sailing: fibreglass superstructures, moulded non-slip decks, lifting keels, and tiller steering rather than passage-making gear. Tony Castro's later Spring 25 and 265 closed out the operation's own production, by then trading as Canvey Yacht Builders, before it stopped building in the 1990s — larger, more powerful boats built in far smaller numbers, worth targeting for buyers after the newest design generation under the badge rather than the oldest pedigree.

Size alone won't sort a Jaguar the way it does with a single-designer brand: a 25-footer might be an early Catalina-licensed cruiser or a later Castro-designed Spring 25, and the 21 and 23 sit apart from both as Mullins originals built for different waters. The full model directory on this page breaks the range out by year and length — worth checking against the era guidance above before comparing two similarly sized boats.
