When Elan Yachts launched the Elan 310 in late 2009, the Slovenian yard and naval architect Rob Humphreys issued a direct challenge to the conventional cruiserracer market. Affectionately dubbed a pocket rocket, this 31foot yacht was conceived as an entrylevel performance cruiser that could bridge the gap between highlatitude shorthanded racing and comfortable family weekending. Rather than simply scaling down their existing line of moderate cruising yachts, Elan and Humphreys drew inspiration from the oceanracing circuit, incorporating design philosophies from Class 40 and Volvo Open 70 designs. The result was an avantgarde hull form characterized by a highly pronounced hard chine, a broad open transom, twin rudders, and a retractable bowsprit—features that were virtually unheard of in this size class at the time. The Elan 310 was designed to compete directly against formidable contemporary models such as the Beneteau First 31.7, Jeanneau Sun Fast 3200, Archambault 31, and Dehler 32. It carved out its own unique niche by offering a level of highperformance downwind planing that standard production cruisers could not match, while retaining a fully realized, bright, and modern interior for comfortable overnighting.
