The Dufour 1800, launched in 1979, represents a significant chapter in the evolution of the La Rochelle-based shipyard. Designed by Laurent Cordelle rather than the company's founder, this 25-foot cruiser-racer was engineered to bridge the gap between small daysailers and serious coastal cruisers. Named for its approximate displacement of 1,800 kilograms, the model succeeded the original, more traditional Dufour 25 designed by Michel Dufour. While the two models are often conflated due to their similar length overall (LOA), the 1800 introduced a more modern, beamier hull form and a more efficient underwater profile, reflecting a shift in design priorities toward interior volume and offshore stability during the late 1970s. It was a commercial success, with approximately 800 units produced before it was succeeded by the Dufour 2800 and later the T7.
