Beneteau Oceanis 34 Buyer's Guide
Shopping the brokerage market for a used Beneteau Oceanis 34 means choosing among a design launched in 2008 with plans by Finot-Conq and interiors by Nauta Design, a 33-foot 11-inch cruiser that won Cruising World's Best Value honor for 2009. Most boats you meet will be conventional coastal cruisers with the standard Neil Pryde furling main and jib, a 29-horsepower Yanmar, and the 6-foot 1-inch deep or 4-foot 6-inch shoal keel. The model's documented structure — solid-glass hull with bonded grid liner and 360-degree bulkheads, balsa-cored deck — is consistent across the used fleet, so the buyer's work is in layout, equipment, and a short known-issues list.
Layouts on the Used Market
Owner three-cabin layouts are the more common on the used market, but both are available; ex-charter examples are common. The Nauta interior below feels big for a 34-footer regardless of layout, with golden Alpi woodwork, long settees that become sea berths with lee cloths, and a saloon table folding up to serve five or six. The galley holds a two-burner stove and oven, aft-opening refrigerator, and a centerline double sink, while a roomy head to starboard of the companionway steps carries a gelcoat finish and two opening ports of three. Aft of the galley a cabin with a huge athwartships double berth uses an aft-facing transom port for flow-through ventilation; forward the V-berth cabin has hanging locker, shelves, and lockers. On deck, wraparound cockpit seats, an angled bulkhead backrest, and a lift-up aft seat to the swim platform appear on all examples, with a shallow starboard seat locker and port life-raft stowage under the lift-up section.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Chartplotter, bimini, autopilot, and heating are commonly fitted to used boats. Often seen are hot water, teak decks, swim platform, furling main, cockpit shower, and AIS. A spinnaker, bow thruster, life raft, solar, asymmetric spinnaker, or short-handed setup are sometimes seen or owner upgrades rather than standard. The original optional chart plotter sat in a built-in pod on the pedestal, and the standard 105-percent jib trims on the primary winch; the traditional hoist main was a factory option against the standard furling rig. The builder noted the use of teak was being phased out in favor of managed-forestry woods such as iroko, so later build trim may differ from early teak-toerail boats.
What to Inspect
The documented known issues are narrow. Testers noted the saloon could have more handholds, so check whether prior owners added grabrails for offshore use. The companionway allows drop boards to slide up and stow under the sliding hatch, and the winch on the cabin top to port controls halyards, vang, outhaul, and mainsheet — verify that quadrant, cable, and rudder stock are sound given the Goïot cable-and-quadrant steering. The deck-stepped 9/10ths rig by US Spars with swept double spreaders and wire rigging to outboard chainplates should be inspected at terminals and furler; the jib runs on a Profurl furler. The separate vented propane locker next to the port life-raft area must close and vent correctly.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
These boats typically appear in the United States, France, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Greece, and Croatia. For a buyer, the short checklist is: confirm layout (owner three-cabin more common, ex-charter common), verify the furling-main standard rig or optional hoist, check for added saloon handholds, exercise the drop-board stowage and Goïot steering, and confirm the vented propane locker. The Oceanis 34 remains a volume-minded cruiser whose used fleet is well-documented and structurally conventional.
