In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the European sailboat manufacturing landscape underwent a quiet revolution. Winfried Herrmann, a German entrepreneur who had built a successful window and door company, redirected his industrial expertise toward boat building, officially founding Bavaria Yachtbau in 1978. To establish his new venture as a serious competitor against the highly regarded, qualityobsessed Scandinavian shipyards of the era—such as Maxi and Albin—Herrmann commissioned Axel Mohnhaupt, a brilliant fluid mechanics engineer and yacht designer. Mohnhaupt, who famously balanced his work in naval architecture with academic research into artificial hearts, brought a highly scientific, hydrodynamic approach to Bavaria’s early fleet. Launched in 1981, the Bavaria 770 emerged as a key milestone of this "Model Zero" generation. It was engineered not as a cheap, massmarket commodity, but as a sturdy, highperformance pocket cruiser capable of delivering true family cruising comfort in a package of just twentyfive feet.
