Launched in 1979 by Barbican Yachts in Plymouth, the model was born from the hull of the earlier Atlantic Clipper 36, but with a significantly revised coachroof and interior that aligned more closely with the traditional aesthetic Griffiths favored. Constructed with a solid GRP hull and encapsulated ballast, the Barbican 33 was built as a rugged, sea-kindly alternative to the increasingly lightweight production yachts of the 1980s. While Barbican Yachts ceased production in the early 1990s, the design remains a staple of the British long-distance cruising community, often compared to Griffiths' earlier masterpiece, the Golden Hind 31.
