The Westerly Conway 36 stands as a big, powerful centrecockpit cruiser in the solid Westerly tradition, launched by Westerly Yachts of Waterlooville, Hampshire and drawn by Laurent Giles. When the first Conways appeared in 1974 they were the largest model Westerly had yet produced, and the type carried that banner until the Corsair succeeded it; Westerly Conways themselves continued to be built until 1983. The same centrecockpit hull and deck later underpinned the Solway with twin bilge keels, while a different deck moulding produced aftcockpit Medways and Galways, and for a very short time the last of those aftcockpit derivatives were sold as Westerly 35s.

Westerly Conway 36 Buyer's Guide

Shopping the used market for a Westerly Conway 36 means looking at a centre-cockpit Laurent Giles cruiser built by Westerly in the UK, with production running from the mid-1970s until 1983. Most survivors are ketches, and the type's walk-through aft cabin with en-suite heads makes it a recognizable liveaboard candidate among the builder's larger designs.

Layouts on the Used Market

Owner three-cabin layouts are the more common on the brokerage market, but both configurations are available, and ex-charter examples are common. The standard plan gives two cabins plus saloon with eight berths: a forward v-berth, saloon settees at 6' 4" each, a passage berth over 7' 6" long by the chart table, and an aft double measuring 6' 0" by 7' 6" at the wide end. Saloon headroom is 6' 3". Buyers should note the bulkhead at the aft passage sits at forehead height, so the walk-through requires stooping. The head is small, and on some boats the aft-cabin door leads to an additional head while on others it opens to the lazarette and engine room.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

Commonly fitted gear on offered boats includes autopilot, chartplotter, solar, life raft, EPIRB and heating, so a shopper can usually expect core safety and power systems in place. Often-seen additions are bimini, radar, AIS and hot water. Less common owner upgrades include a gennaker or asymmetric spinnaker for light-air sailing and a shorthanded sail-handling setup; teak decks appear on some but are not the norm. The deep lazarette with sturdy latches and the cockpit-mounted propane locker in its own protected area are original design features worth verifying.

What to Inspect

The Mercedes OM636 diesel powering most Conways is smooth and generally very long-lived and reliable, but some later boats carried 36 hp Volvos, and any elderly engine may show rust despite owner claims of good maintenance anchor. Check the Mk I versus Mk II interior: Mk I boats have quite a lot of exposed GRP inner mouldings, while from 1978 the Mk II adopted an all-wood interior with GRP still under the woodwork in places anchor. Confirm the aft-cabin door function, since on some boats it leads to an additional head and on others to the lazarette or engine room anchor. Inspect the low passage bulkhead to the aft cabin for any modification, and review any replaced systems or seacocks documented by the owner.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

Typical markets for the Conway 36 are the United Kingdom, Spain, Greece, Germany, Portugal and Croatia. For a buyer, the checklist is short: confirm rig (ketch or sloop) and layout; verify engine make and condition; inspect Mk I or Mk II interior mouldings; test the walk-through clearance and aft-cabin door use; and confirm the presence of commonly fitted safety gear such as life raft and EPIRB.
