The Westerly Conway 36 emerged from the Laurent Giles drawing board as the largest model Westerly produced at the time of its introduction, a big powerful centrecockpit cruiser in the solid Westerly tradition and in the same general style as the Longbow and other smaller Westerlys. First Conways were built in 1974, with the type continuing until 1983 when it was superseded by the Corsair. The one obvious difference between the Conway and the smaller Laurent Giles designs for Westerly is the absence of the bow knuckle, a telling detail that marks the Conway as a deliberate step up in scale rather than a stretched smaller sister.

Westerly Conway 36 Buyer's Guide

Shopping the brokerage market for a Westerly Conway 36 means looking at a Laurent Giles centre-cockpit cruiser built from the mid-1970s into the early 1980s, with the ketch rig dominating the surviving population. Owner three-cabin layouts are the more common on the used market, but both are available, and ex-charter examples are common. The centre-cockpit hull and deck were also used for the Solway and, with a different deck moulding, for aft-cockpit Medway and Galway derivatives, so confirm the Conway badge and walk-through aft cabin before assuming the layout.

Layouts on the Used Market

The Conway’s accommodation is anchored by a walk-through from saloon past the chart table to an aft cabin with a good sized double and en-suite heads; the aft double measures 6' 0" fore and aft and 7' 6" wide at the forward end, tapering aft, with storage cabinets along the sides. The saloon itself holds settee berths each 6' 4" long and a passage berth over 7' 6" long aft of the chart table, while the forward cabin gives a generous v-berth with a good-sized hanging locker across from a very small head. Note the low bulkhead in the passage to the rear cabin sits at average adult forehead height, so plan to stoop. Mk I boats show quite a lot of exposed GRP inner mouldings; from 1978 the Mk II brought a much more attractive all-wood interior, though GRP mouldings remain under the woodwork in places.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

On the used market, autopilot, chartplotter, solar, life raft, heating, and EPIRB are commonly fitted, and radar, bimini, and AIS are often seen. A frequent owner upgrade path includes hot water, short-handed setup, inverter, asymmetric spinnaker, dodger, teak decks, and gennaker, which sit in the sometimes-fitted tier. The standard engine is the Mercedes OM636 delivering 42 hp, with some later boats carrying 36 hp Volvos; a documented refit example added a brand new refrigerator in the passageway, a diesel heating unit on the salon bulkhead, and a new looking water heater. A propane locker is already located in the cockpit in its own protected area, which simplifies compliance with safety expectations.

What to Inspect

The aft-cabin door layout varies between hulls: on some Conways it leads to an additional head, while on a documented 1977 example it opens to the lazarette and engine room, so verify the actual routing and sealing. The elderly Mercedes engines may show some rust, though owners report they have been well maintained and the type is recorded as smooth and generally very long-lived and reliable. Check the lazarette lockers for the sturdy latches and confirm the very deep lazarette gives proper access to the inside of the boat and to the engine, and inspect any Mk I exposed GRP inner mouldings for hidden deterioration under later woodwork.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

Typical markets for the Conway 36 are the United Kingdom, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Germany, and Croatia. When viewing, confirm the Mk I versus Mk II interior, verify the aft-cabin door leads where expected, test engine access through the deep lazarette, and confirm the ketch rig and walk-through aft cabin match the Conway designation rather than a Solway, Medway, or Galway sister.
