Ta Shing Taswell 43 Buyer's Guide
Shopping the brokerage market for a Ta Shing Taswell 43 means weighing a late-1980s Bill Dixon design built in Taiwan as a voluminous center-cockpit sloop with a fin keel. These are well-built fiberglass cruisers with abundant space above and below deck, but the used fleet carries design-specific caveats around decks and storage that matter more than cosmetic fit-out when you inspect.
Layouts on the Used Market
The Taswell 43 comes with a variety of interior arrangement options, though all share an aft owners suite with island berth and private head with stall shower, a forward stateroom with its own head and stall shower, two cabins with bunk beds and a second bow bathroom, a nearly circular port dinette, a forward-facing starboard navigation station, and a U-shaped galley. The interior is ideal for coastal sailing or living aboard with very efficient use of space, but that efficiency comes at the expense of necessary bulk storage for large items, and because of the absence of bulk storage these vessels are less than suitable for long-distance offshore sailing. Early boats had a better configuration for offshore work than subsequent models, which are completely unsuitable for such use.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
On the used market a Taswell 43 will commonly be fitted with a chartplotter, air conditioning,. inverter, radar, heating, dinghy davits, spinnaker or asymmetric spinnaker, bimini, dodger, solar, furling main, and Starlink, with watermaker, code zero, freezer, cockpit shower, AIS, and autopilot often seen. The standard engine in these boats is a Yanmar 4JH-HTE diesel of 55 horsepower with a 326-litre fuel tank, giving roughly 7 knots under power; the tight, high cockpit and elevated position producing larger rolling in a seaway are inherent rather than upgradeable.
What to Inspect
The oriental teak decks are screw-fastened over plywood and need replacement 15 to 25 years into the life of the boat; that construction will almost certainly leave substantial rot in the plywood sub-deck before rebuild, and the structural deck — the sub-deck — cannot be inspected, making the teak decks unsuitable for a long-distance offshore cruiser. Purchasing a teak-decked example for extended blue-sea cruising is not suggested given the limited lifespan, extra upkeep, and heat underfoot in the tropics. Also confirm the absence of bulk storage for large items and the fin keel's iron construction with draft of 1.91 to 2.01 metres.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Taswell 43s typically appear in the United States and Australia. For a coastal or liveaboard cruiser they offer rare volume and a high level of construction, but pass on teak-decked boats for ocean work and budget a deck rebuild.
- Prefer early configurations over subsequent models for any offshore intent
- Inspect for hidden sub-deck rot; assume teak decks require replacement
- Confirm lack of bulk storage rules out long-distance passage use
- Verify 55 hp Yanmar and 1.91–2.01 m draft
