Northshore Mg-C27 Buyer's Guide
The Northshore Mg-C27 on the used market is the later name for the Rob Humphreys-designed Contessa 27, a 1984 cruiser-racer of which roughly 150 were sold across both badges. Most examples are fin-keel boats drawing 5' 0", with the lifting-keel version — adjustable from 3' 2" to 5' 10" — the rarer find. Northshore's later moulding and sales involvement means some boats reached buyers through that channel, but the design itself is a small, 6,000-lb, 27' 5" cruiser with a fractional sloop rig and a 413 sq ft sail plan.
Layouts on the Used Market
The Mg-C27 offers two cabins and 4/5 berths. The saloon has the galley to port and an aft-facing chart table to starboard, with two settee berths and a raised forward berth area separated by a zipped curtain. Aft of the galley is a large quarterberth, nominally a double but quite a small one. In lift-keel boats the keel winch sits on the aft end of the saloon table with a clear panel on the keel box showing keel position; the fin-keel version is generally similar apart from the absent centreboard case.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Chartplotters, heating, spinnakers, and autopilots are commonly fitted to boats offered in this market. The original self-tacking jib on a curved forward track has on documented examples been removed and the jib sheeted conventionally, a frequent owner-level change rather than a factory option. The usual engine is a Volvo Penta 2001 diesel of 9 BHP.
What to Inspect
Most of the approximately 150 boats were fin keel, so confirm which version you view; the rarer drop keel versions carry a table-mounted keel winch operated by a removable handle and a clear keel-box panel that should be checked for clarity and function. Verify the self-tacking jib track removal if conventional sheeting is present, and inspect the saloon for the centreboard case in lift-keel examples. No documented structural defects or flooding paths are recorded for the design.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
The typical market for the Mg-C27 is the United Kingdom. Buyers should: confirm fin or lift keel and inspect keel winch and sight panel on lift-keel boats; check that the quarterberth's small double size suits their needs; expect commonly fitted chartplotter, heating, spinnaker, and autopilot; and verify any conventional jib sheeting against the original self-tacking configuration.
