Lagoon 421 Buyer's Guide
The Lagoon 421 on the brokerage market is the third-generation Lagoon catamaran that succeeded the 420, offered in three- or four-cabin layouts with the corrections and diesel drivetrain that defined the model from launch. Ex-charter examples are common, and the boat's rigid bimini, gullwing bridgedeck, and vertical-bowed hull make it easy to spot against the taller, bulkier 420 it replaced.
Layouts on the Used Market
Owner three-cabin layouts are the more common on the used market, but both are available. The 421 is offered in three or four double-cabin versions, with large vertical windows in the saloon and large sunlight windows in the cabins. Natural ventilation of all interior spaces is provided by large and convenient opening hatches, and the fixed bimini top extended living space from the saloon to the cockpit. The cockpit itself carries a changeable table so it serves as either a dining area or a lounge. Wide sidedecks and a wide aft deck characterize the exterior circuit, and the bridgedeck is gullwing-shaped.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
On the used market the 421 commonly carries an inverter, bimini, autopilot, chartplotter, dinghy davits, watermaker, solar, freezer, electric winches, AIS, and air conditioning. Hot water, radar, cockpit shower, gennaker, asymmetric spinnaker, and life raft are often seen. Lithium batteries, a spinnaker, and a swim platform appear as less common owner upgrades. The standard drivetrain is twin 40-horsepower diesels, and the boat's water and fuel capacity split as two 175-liter water tanks and two 300-liter fuel tanks.
What to Inspect
The principal documented point is propulsion: the electric motors were finished as of the time of the article, and the builder returned to diesel engines for the 421 after the 420's hybrid automotive-derived system returned to the good old diesels. Confirm any example shows the diesel pair rather than orphaned hybrid hardware. Otherwise the published records note no structural defects for the 421; verify the rigid bimini extension, the mainsheet track fixed to that bimini, and the davits as the defining aft-end fittings.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Typical markets for the Lagoon 421 include Spain, the United States, Italy, Croatia, Türkiye, and Guadeloupe. For a shopper, the checklist is short and sourced:
- Confirm three- or four-cabin layout and whether it is an ex-charter example
- Verify twin diesel drivetrain, not residual hybrid equipment
- Check the rigid bimini, coachroof-extended mainsheet track, and davits
- Note short-mast charter variant if bridge clearance matters
