Developed by Bob Johnson in the early 1980s under his initial company name, Traditional Watercraft, the 26 Mk I took the concepts of the preceding Island Packet 25 and expanded upon them to create a "pocket cruiser" with the internal volume and stability of a much larger vessel. Produced between 1982 and 1984 before being succeeded by the Mk II, this model established the signature Island Packet aesthetic: a cream-colored hull, a heavy-duty cutter rig, and the proprietary Full Foil Keel. The boat’s defining characteristic is its extraordinary beam-to-length ratio; at 10 feet 6 inches wide on a 26-foot 2-inch hull, it offers a footprint and stability profile more common in 30-footers of the era.
