Hylas sailboats: one yard's exclusive line, carried across three design eras
Every Hylas has come from a single builder, Queen Long Marine in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, which became "founder and owner of the Hylas Yachts brand" in 1985 and has produced sailboats continuously since. That kind of single-yard continuity is unusual in production sailing, and Hylas frames its own identity around it: not a fixed model line so much as a design brief carried forward in turn by a succession of naval architects, from the Sparkman & Stephens boat that gave the brand its start to Bill Dixon's newer, twin-helmed range.
Origins and ownership
Hylas's history begins one step removed from its own name. In the early 1980s, Stevens Yachts contracted Queen Long Shipyard to build 56 units of its Sparkman & Stephens-designed Stevens Custom 47, then sold Queen Long the molds. The yard kept building the design under its own name — first as the Hylas 47, later as the Hylas 49 — the deal that turned a contract builder into a brand in its own right.
Ownership has stayed inside one family for three generations, a claim made by Hylas itself and independently corroborated by SAILING Magazine's account of the yard. Company president Joseph Huang has described starting at the company alongside his father — the man he identifies as the founder of Hylas Yachts — and by 2020 Andy Huang held the title of CEO. The Kaohsiung facility runs a 32,000-square-foot main construction hall, a laminating hall, a paint facility, design and administration offices, and its own yacht testing tank; every hull that leaves it is proven either in that tank or, for boats over 55 feet, on a sea trial out of Kaohsiung Harbor. By its own account, the yard has now launched more than 500 vessels.
The designers
Three names carry most of Hylas's design history: Sparkman & Stephens at the brand's Stevens-47 origin, Germán Frers across more than three decades of the semi-custom cruising range, and Bill Dixon for the newer H48 and H57 generation. Frers' own design archive credits him with drawing the lines of the Hylas 46 in the mid-1980s and describes a relationship with Queen Long that has continued for "more than three decades" across that range. More recently, Hylas has credited Zurn Yacht Design in the US and Hot Lab in Italy as collaborators on its newest range work, alongside New Zealand designer Dean Salthouse.
Construction through the eras
The earliest boats in the lineup — the Stevens 47 design that became the Hylas 47 and 49 — were solid-fiberglass hulls with balsa-cored decks. Dixon's H57 marks a documented departure: a vacuum-infused hull built around a closed-cell foam core, laid up with isophthalic gelcoat and vinylester resin and finished with five epoxy barrier coats against blisters, with its structural bulkheads and subtray glassed in before the hull leaves the mold. Hylas itself frames the H57's twin helms and rudders, lighter cored hull, and Solent rig as marking a new era in its designs.
Lines and generations
For most of its history, Hylas's range was Frers' work: a continuous line of semi-custom cruisers running from the 42 through the 46, 54, 56, 63, and 70. Dixon's H57, which debuted at the 2021 fall boat shows, broke from that pattern with input from Hylas COO Peggy Huang and her husband David Crafa, who worked directly with the Dixon design team to help develop the boat's first hull. Frers kept designing into that same recent period, too — his Hylas 60 was recognized as Yachting World's 2021 Boat of the Year.
Who Hylas is for
Hylas suits buyers who want a semi-custom, offshore-capable boat from a yard that has built nothing else for more than 40 years. Frers' own site frames Queen Long's range — roughly 46 to 70 feet — as built specifically for the international charter market, and Hylas backs that with in-house custom interiors finished to reflect each owner's taste rather than a fixed factory spec. That combination of exclusivity, semi-custom fit-out, and one continuous builder suits buyers looking for a boat built to be sailed hard and far, not a production hull optimized for volume.
