Design and Construction
The 54's structure begins with a solid fiberglass hull reinforced by Twaron, a carbon aramid fiber, with vinylester resin used throughout the molding process and isophthalic gelcoat plus two epoxy barrier coats guarding against osmosis. The deck is cored everywhere except in high-load zones, where solid fiberglass carries the strain. Joining the two is a wide flange bonded with 3M 5200 and through-bolted on 4-inch centers, while interior bulkheads are tabbed on all sides and massive floors give the hull rigid athwartship support. A step-down sail locker forms part of a watertight collision forward bulkhead, and the fin keel is solid lead secured by 35mm stainless bolts over an 8mm backing plate.
At 47,184 pounds design displacement with a fraction over 20,000 pounds of external lead ballast, the boat carries a ballast-to-displacement ratio of 43 and a displacement-to-length ratio of 220, paired with a sail area-to-displacement ratio of 17.6. The powerful fin keel draws a standard 7 feet, and a hydraulic centerboard remains an option for shoal draft. A partially balanced spade rudder with a small skeg rounds out the appendages, and the air draft reaches 77 feet.
Rig and Handling
The standard Seldon spars and Hasselford discontinuous stainless standing rigging support a cutter configured with a Furlex System 400 roller furling headsail and Doyle main and 135-percent genoa. A quick-release inner forestay, staysail, and running gear appear as popular options. Sail handling is concentrated at the helm: primary winches and the mainsheet winch fall within easy reach, and all controls run aft to the deck just behind the coaming either side of the companionway. Test sailors aboard the RS Sapphire held 6 knots at 40 degrees apparent in very light air and found the 50,000-pound hull tacked and accelerated more sharply than its weight would suggest anchor.
Accommodations
Inside, the cabin is lovely and vast, lit by large ports — two to each side and three forward — with headroom over 7 feet. Queen Long's teak joinerwork is superb, balanced by practical white laminated headliners, and the shimmering cabin sole pieces secure in place against knockdown. The three-cabin plan places a centerline queen forward with hanging lockers, while the port cabin flexes as a double, singles, workbench, or office. A forward head with stall shower complements the saloon's expandable teak table that drops to a double, plus a starboard sea berth. The nav station tucks port with an L-shaped desk and computer shelf, and the starboard galley runs more than 7 feet with abundant counter and twin centerline drains. Aft, the huge stateroom has an island queen with split mattress and lee cloth for sea use, plus a separate stall shower. Hylas offered custom interior plans at little or no cost.
Equipment and Systems
Standard ground tackle is serious: a Nillson 2200 vertical windlass, 60-pound CQR and 55-pound Barnacle anchors, and 300 feet of galvanized chain, backed by a robust double-roller stemhead. The 32-inch stanchions, double lifelines, and notable stainless work including an optional extended pushpit come as part of the package. Three 700-amp-hour 8D house batteries feed an accessible aft-facing panel, while a Yanmar 125-horsepower four-cylinder diesel with dual alternators sits below the galley sinks and cockpit well. Grunert refrigerator and freezer, a trash compactor, and foot pumps round out the galley utilities, and tankage beneath the saloon sole combines fuel and water to 550 gallons through excellent manifolds.
The Verdict
The Hylas 54 stands as a thoughtfully engineered Frers passagemaker whose aramid-reinforced solid hull, watertight forward bulkhead, and meticulous joinerwork justify its reputation among serious cruisers. Light-air performance surprises for the displacement, and the helm-centered sail plan suits short-handed passage making, though the 77-foot air draft and 7-foot fin demand careful harbor planning.
