In the late 1960s, the yachting world was transitioning from the fullkeel, heavydisplacement cruisers of the early fiberglass era toward more agile, performanceoriented designs. The Hinckley 38, introduced in 1968, represents a fascinating chapter in this evolution. It was born of a unique crossborder collaboration between the legendary design firm Sparkman & Stephens, Canadian builder Hughes Boat Works, and Henry R. Hinckley & Company of Southwest Harbor, Maine 2. Under this arrangement, Hughes molded the fiberglass hulls using the Sparkman & Stephens Design 1903 lines—the same hull used for the Hughes 381. The raw hulls were then transported to the Hinckley yard in Maine, where Hinckley’s shipwrights engineered their own distinctive, elegant deck mold and completed the vessel with highend deck hardware, custom mechanical installations, and a luxurious, traditional wood interior. This joint production ran from 1968 to 1970, resulting in just 28 meticulously finished yachts that bridged the gap between classic New England craftsmanship and contemporary racing performance.
