Fuji 35 Buyer's Guide
The Fuji 35 is a John Alden-designed ketch and cutter built in Japan from 1973 to 1982, a narrow, heavy-displacement cruiser of traditional character with teak-rich accommodation and a reputation for seaworthy behavior. For a shopper scanning the used market, the boat rewards a careful look at deck condition and drivetrain history more than cosmetic wear.
Layouts on the Used Market
Two rig configurations appear: the staysail ketch with a mizzen in the cockpit, and the cutter with a single taller mast. Both sleep six, with a forward V-berth, saloon settees, and a starboard aft quarter berth, and both share a port-side galley at the companionway, a pullout nav station opposite, and a teak-louvered companionway door. The ketch gives more sail-trim options; the cutter is simpler and less windy. Some boats left the yard with wooden spars, others with painted aluminum, and that choice is visible above deck rather than below.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Power and energy is the biggest variable: most original boats carried a 36-horsepower Perkins 4107 diesel, fewer had Westerbeke, and many owners have since fitted a Yanmar—confirm what is installed and its service state. Sail handling centers on the self-tending staysail fitted to some boats, which makes short-handed sailing easier, and all lines lead aft for cockpit control. Comfort items are period-correct: a gimbaled kerosene stove with oven, icebox, and stainless sink define the galley, while a pedestal wheel and bridgedeck cockpit with teak coamings and a teak sole shape the outdoor space.
What to Inspect
The one structural caveat is the deck. Moisture intrusion can lead to delamination of the deck core, so sound the coach roof, coamings, and locker lids and check for soft spots or staining at fasteners. The hull itself is solid hand-laid fiberglass with polyurethane insulation and bronze or stainless fittings, and the bridgedeck should be verified to keep water from the companionway.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Fuji 35s on the used market are best located through general brokerage searches rather than expected in volume.
- Confirm rig type and spar material (wood or aluminum)
- Verify engine make and refit history (Perkins, Westerbeke, or Yanmar)
- Sound deck for water infusion and delamination
- Check bridgedeck and companionway sealing
- Inspect teak joinery and bronze/stainless fittings for corrosion
