Freedom Yachts has long marched to its own beat, but the 1993 release of the David Pedrickdesigned Freedom 35 marked a sophisticated turning point for the Rhode Island builder. While early iterations of the brand under founder Garry Hoyt championed ultrasimplified cat ketches with wishbone rigs, by the early 1990s, the market demanded a more traditional aesthetic combined with modern underbodies. Enter Pedrick, whose pedigree in America's Cup racing brought a sleek, performanceoriented hull form to Freedom’s signature unstayed rig 4. Built by TillotsonPearson Inc. (TPI)—pioneers in composite construction—the Freedom 35 was engineered as an easytohandle, highly refined coastal and light offshore cruiser. It remains one of the most successful models from the latter half of the builder's lifespan, with approximately 85 hulls produced.
