Introduced in 1976 during a golden era of European pocket cruisers, the Contest 28 is a testament to the uncompromising standards of Dutch yacht construction. Commissioned by the Medemblikbased yard Conyplex (known today globally as Contest Yachts) and designed by the celebrated naval architect Dick Zaal, this 28foot masthead sloop was conceived as a fast, seaworthy family cruiser built to endure challenging offshore environments. Over its sixyear production run ending in 1981, Conyplex produced 121 hulls (numbered 001 through 121), making it a relatively rare but highly soughtafter classic in northern European and coastal North American waters. Built to the prevailing International Offshore Rule (IOR) design influences of the mid1970s, the Contest 28 represents a time when production boatbuilders prioritized robust laminates, heavy ballast, and exquisite interior woodwork over maximizing cabin volume at the expense of sailing characteristics.
