In the late 1970s, the Scandinavian yachting scene was a hotbed of competitive cruiserracer development. Navigators sought vessels that could navigate the tight, rocky confines of regional archipelagos while offering enough domestic comfort to keep a family happy over short Northern European summers. Out of this demanding crucible emerged the Compis 97, designed by the celebrated Swedish naval architect Bernt Andersson. Introduced in 1978 and entering production in 1979, this 31foot sloop was Andersson's bid to redefine spaceefficiency and performance in a crowded segment. Built initially by Compisbåtar AB in Hammarö, near Karlstad, Sweden, and later by Norrlandsplast and other regional builders after the original yard's 1982 bankruptcy, the Compis 97 enjoyed a production run that lasted until 1985. Although total production remained modest—likely under eighty hulls—the model carved out a distinct legacy as a clever, swift coastal cruiser that punched far above its dimensional weight. A notable portion of these vessels were completed as ownerfinished kit boats (självbygge), meaning the quality of the interior cabinetry and systems can vary significantly across the fleet.
