The Sunfish is the undisputed giant of the beach dinghy world, representing the platonic ideal of minimalist sailing. Designed in 1951 by Alexander "Al" Bryan and Cortlandt "Cort" Heyniger of Alcort, Inc., in Waterbury, Connecticut, the boat was a direct evolution of the flatdecked wooden Sailfish. Looking to improve on the wetter, less stable predecessor, the designers received vital input from Al’s wife, Aileen Shields Bryan—a decorated racing champion who wanted a more stable craft with a footwell. The resulting design widening the beam and incorporating a dedicated cockpit footwell, transforming the concept of a "sailing surfboard" into a highly functional, beachlaunched pocket cruiser. Over seven decades of continuous production and more than half a million hulls later, the Sunfish stands as the most popular fiberglass sailboat ever designed, celebrated for its durability, simplicity, and multigenerational appeal.
