Aira 22 Buyer's Guide
The Aira 22 is a Dutch-built daysailer designed by Simonis-Voogd and offered in three versions — ClubSailer, DaySailer, and MatchRacer — that together cover training fleets, family sailing, and stripped racing. With several hundred sold across Europe and production from 2018, it is a modern 6.50 meter hull on a lead-bulb keel that buyers will meet in brokerage as a used design.
Layouts on the Used Market
The ClubSailer is the training and rental variant, built for clubs, schools, and boat hire with storage under cockpit seats and in the forward cabin and optionally a rubber strake and rubberized nose. The DaySailer targets relaxed sailing with family and friends, carrying seat cushions, padded backrests, and a swivel table, and sometimes ordered with a cabin air mattress and slatted frame. The MatchRacer drops the engine and adds a 25 square-meter gennaker system for racing. All share the 6.50 meter length, 2.20 meter beam, and a choice of 0.90 meter flat keel or 1.15 meter lifting keel on the ClubSailer.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
On the used market the boat commonly carries solar power, lithium batteries, and a gennaker — the last often on a furler at the retractable bowsprit as seen on rental units. The DaySailer could originally be specified with a 1.5 kW electric engine that deploys in seven seconds, and the gennaker furler is the key sail-handling item to confirm. Beyond those, buyer-consequence equipment clusters around power and energy — solar and lithium supporting the electric drive — and sail handling, where the bowsprit furler distinguishes a well-equipped example.
What to Inspect
The one documented handling constraint is that with the gennaker set you cannot tack but must jibe, so check that the gennaker furler on the bowsprit is present and serviceable if the boat is sold with that sail.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
The Aira 22 typically appears in the Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. For a shopper, the short list is: confirm which of the three versions you are viewing; verify keel type (flat or lifting); check for solar, lithium, and gennaker as commonly fitted; test the electric drive deploy if fitted; and inspect the gennaker furler if the bowsprit sail is included.
