Buying a used Viko: the savings live in the spec sheet
A used Viko is a young boat by most brokerage standards — the sport line dates from the 2010s — and the buying question is less about age than about specification. The brand's pitch has always been a modern Italian-drawn hull at a fraction of the established brands' prices, and the test press has been consistent about where that price is earned: in finish quality and in the standard hardware fit-out. A well-optioned, well-kept example can be a genuine bargain; a base-spec boat may need the upgrades its first owner skipped.
Which era to target
The range splits cleanly by design studio. Sergio Lupoli Yacht Design drew the S sport line — the 20 through 35 — with the S22 and its award-winning pedigree establishing the type, the S30 following, and the S35 as the line's flagship. The Cossutti Yacht Design era begins with the Stratos 43, the larger boat YACHT magazine framed as the same philosophy scaled up. Within the Lupoli boats, later hulls follow the company's 2017 production expansion.
What to inspect across the range
The recurring theme across independent tests is variability and light specification rather than any single defect. YACHT magazine found the wood finish differing noticeably between the S35s it inspected, and Yachting Monthly's S35 test flagged a cluster of fit-out points worth checking on any example: a mainsheet purchase too weak for a building breeze, early rust on stanchion bases, under-tensioned rigging, stiff rudder bearings, and an uninsulated engine box. On the small end, Practical Boat Owner's test of the 21 found play in the rudder assembly and a centreplate that knocked in its case. None of these are structural verdicts — the same reviews rate the boats' sailing qualities well for the money — but together they say: inspect the deck hardware, the rig tune, and the finish on the specific hull in front of you, and price in the upgrades a first owner may not have made.
Navigating the lineup
Decide first between the trailerable small boats and the S sport cruisers, then let length and the design era settle it — the Lupoli boats for the established, class-proven end of the range, the Stratos for buyers wanting the same value idea at family-cruiser size.
