The launch of the X79 in 1979 did more than just establish XYachts; it redefined the European racing circuit. As the first design by Niels Jeppesen, the X79 was a radical departure from the heavy, IORinfluenced designs of the era. It was conceived as a highperformance "One Design" that could be easily trailed but offered enough utility to be used for spartan weekend cruising. With 468 hulls built over its production run, the model became a phenomenon in the Baltic and North Seas, frequently sweeping the podiums of major regattas like the Sjælland Rundt. According to the XYachts Heritage record, the boat was designed to be a "highspeed racer" that remained accessible to a wide range of sailors, blending a light displacement of approximately 1,350 kg with a generous sail plan.
